Washington, DC

(Washington, DC) –Because of the extreme heat this week, Mayor Bowser has activated the District’s Heat Emergency Plan, which will remain active until Monday, July 22, at 9 am. The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting that the District will experience dangerous humidity with temperatures in the mid to upper 90’s, with heat index values upwards of 100 degrees each day. The Mayor also extended service hours for low-barrier shelters and select Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR)-operated outdoor pools and splash parks through Sunday, July 21.

When the temperature or heat index in the District reaches 95 degrees, District Government, through the Department of Human Services (DHS) and the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA), will implement the Heat Emergency Plan and activate cooling centers for residents to seek relief. Residents needing a cool place to be are encouraged to utilize any library or recreation center during their normal business hours, or the Adams Place Day Center. The Department of General Services (DGS) advises caution when using recreational services throughout the District during a heat emergency; learn more about safety guidelines at dgs.dc.gov.

DPR Pools

Due to the intense heat this week, Mayor Bowser has extended hours for select outdoor pools and splash parks until 9 pm through Sunday, July 21. The Mayor also announced that these pools will open an hour early at 10 am on Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21. All other pools will follow normal operating hours. Cooling Centers:

Cooling Centers are activated in publicly accessible government facilities, homeless shelters, and senior citizen wellness centers, and remain open until 6 pm or until it has been deemed safe to be outdoors. To request transportation to a cooling center for a resident experiencing homelessness, call the hyperthermia hotline at (202) 399-7093. Residents can find their closest cooling center using the District’s interactive map.

Safety Precautions:

The public can limit heat exposure by:

• Staying indoors
• Drinking plenty of liquids and avoiding drinks with caffeine and alcohol
• Limiting sun exposure, especially between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., when the sun is the strongest
• Applying sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outdoors
• Wearing light-colored, lightweight clothing
• Artificial turf fields can get excessively hot, take caution

Low-Barrier Shelters:

Due to high temperatures this week, Mayor Bowser announced that low-barrier shelters will be open 24 hours through Sunday, July 21.

The Adams Place Day Center also serves as a Cooling Facility for individuals experiencing homelessness. The Adams Place Day Center is accessible from 7 am - 7 pm, Monday-Friday, and is located at 2210 Adams Place, NE #1 (entrance in rear of the building).

Families seeking emergency shelter can call 311 at any time day or night. When the DC Government is open, families may also visit the Virginia Williams Family Resource Center at 920 Rhode Island Avenue, NE, Monday – Thursday, between 8 am – 4:30 pm, and Friday between 8 am – 12:30 pm.
