(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will participate in the annual PARK(ing) Day on Friday, September 19, 2014, to highlight the District’s sustainability efforts and to kick off car-free day activities in the region. Launched in 2005 in San Francisco, Calif., the event has spread to cities around the world, as residents and businesses create temporary park spaces in metered parking spaces. More than 20 “pop-up” parks were created in the District as part of the event last year

“DDOT is supportive of PARK(ing) Day, which gives the District of Columbia another opportunity to implement Mayor Vincent C. Gray’s Sustainable DC Plan,” said DDOT Acting Director Matthew Brown. “These park spaces further the plan’s goals in making DC the greenest, healthiest and most livable city in the nation.”

PARK(ing) Day is open to anyone seeking to sponsor a six-hour temporary park. The parks will be limited to metered parking locations without time-of-day restrictions, and should be located in the middle of blocks for safety reasons. Participants will be responsible for the cost of any materials or permitting fees associated with the temporary parks, and will be responsible for cleaning up the spaces after the event.
