Thanksgiving Day 2017

The DC government will be closed Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24 in observance of Thanksgiving.

City Services

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) will observe Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 23. As such, sanitation services will be suspended on Thursday, resuming Friday, November 24. Parking enforcement will also be suspended, with normal operations resuming Friday, November 24. The District of Columbia Government will be closed on Friday, November 24, but this will not impact sanitation services, parking enforcement, or leaf collections.

  • Thursday trash and recycling collections will “slide” to Friday for those who typically receive trash and recycling collection services on Thursday. Friday trash and recycling collections will “slide” to Saturday for those who typically receive trash and recycling collection services on Friday.
  • The Fort Totten and Benning Road transfer stations will be closed Thursday, November 23 and reopen on Friday.
  • Leaf collections will be made on Thanksgiving Day.

Streetcar parking enforcement is daily, including weekends and holidays, e.g., Thanksgiving, along H Street and Benning Road NE, between 3rd Street and Oklahoma Avenue NE. On Sundays and holidays, streetcar parking enforcement is between 8 am and 11 pm. Enforcement on Mondays—Thursdays is 6 am to midnight; and on Fridays and Saturdays, enforcement runs between 6 am and 2 am. Normal enforcement citywide of other parking violations resumes November 24.

Parks and Recreation

All DPR facilities, centers and indoor aquatic facilities will be closed on Thursday, November 23, 2017 and Friday, November 24, 2017. They will reopen on Saturday, November 25, 2017 and:

  • All grass fields are now closed for the winter season until Friday, March 16, 2018.
  • All synthetic fields, playgrounds, tennis courts and basketball courts will be open.
  • All previously permitted events will take place as scheduled.

Department of Motor Vehicles

All DC DMV locations will be closed Thursday, November 23, 2017 and Friday, November 24, 2017 in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday.

All scheduled ticket hearings on November 24 will be rescheduled and customers will be notified by mail. Also, customers with scheduled inspection appointments on November 24  will receive an email with rescheduling instructions. Normal business hours will resume Saturday, November 25.

Department of Transportation

District Department of Transportation (DDOT) parking enforcement will resume normal operations Friday, November 24.

  • DDOT will apply reversible lane operations on Friday, November 24.
  • Streetcar parking enforcement is daily, including weekends and holidays, e.g., Thanksgiving, along H Street and Benning Road NE, between 3rd Street and Oklahoma Avenue NE. On Sundays and holidays, streetcar parking enforcement is between 8 am and 11 pm.   • Normal enforcement citywide of other parking violations resumes Friday, November 24.

DC Public Library

All DC Public Library locations closed at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, November 22 and will be closed Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24 for Thanksgiving.

Department of Human Services 

Those needing Department of Human Services assistance can dial the Shelter Hotline at (202) 399-7093 or 311 for questions or to arrange transportation.
 
Low-Barrier shelters for individuals operate year-round and are open from 5 pm – 9 am.
