OTR Extends Service Hours to 8 pm on April 15 to Help Residents Meet Their Tax Obligations

Monday, April 13, 2015
Free tax prep of DC individual income tax return offered.

The Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) will extend its service hours on Wednesday, April 15, to help District residents meet their tax obligations. The customer service telephone and walk-in centers will be open from 8:15 am to 8 pm.

Free preparation of the District’s individual income tax returns is available at the walk-in center at 1101 4th Street, SW, Suite W270. Simply bring:

  • A copy of your completed federal tax return,
  • Supporting W-2 forms and schedules, and
  • A valid driver’s license or state identification.

Taxpayers requesting tax preparation assistance must arrive at the walk-in center no later than 7 pm.

  • Forms: Forms, instructions, booklets, and additional information are available for download from OTR’s website. The forms can also be picked up at OTR’s Customer Service Walk-In Center, 1101 4th Street, SW, Suite W270.
  • Free File: OTR’s website includes links to a number of online tax preparation programs that allow low-income and other eligible taxpayers to prepare and e-file their federal and DC individual income tax returns at no charge. Taxpayers must first meet the eligibility requirements.
  • Extensions: Taxpayers, who cannot file their DC individual income tax return by the April 15 deadline, can file for an automatic six-month extension, which will push the filing deadline to October 15, 2015. Taxpayers, who have a balance due, must pay what is owed by April 15 or face penalty and interest charges. (It’s an extension of the time to file, not of the time to pay).
