Mayor Bowser Announces Driver Licenses and Identification Cards Now Available to Permanent Residents for up to Eight Years
(Washington, DC) – Mayor Bowser today announced a policy change that allows the DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to issue REAL ID driver licenses and identification cards to permanent residents for up to eight years, effective September 6, 2018. The credentials will no longer expire based on the expiration date of the permanent resident cards, if applicable.
“Good government means finding ways to be more efficient and responding to the needs of residents. This update is about making DC Government work better for DC residents,” said Mayor Bowser.
To obtain a REAL ID credential, residents must provide DC DMV with:
- one proof of identity;
- one proof of social security number, and
- two proofs of DC residency.
While not a national identification card, the REAL ID credential gives residents access to certain federal facilities and the ability to board domestic flights.
Prior to visiting a DC DMV Service Center, residents are encouraged to visit dmv.dc.gov to ensure they have the proper documentation to complete their transaction in one visit. To assist residents in preparing for their in-person visit, DC DMV also offers an online document verification guide.
