Establish a Board of Directors
The board of directors ensures the organization's mission is carried out and provides legal accountability for its operations. It is a good idea to develop a diverse board of directors that has a variety of professional skills to offer and that represents the organization's multiple constituents, including service recipients, contributors, volunteers, and community members.
The primary functions of the board of directors are often financial oversight and fundraising, yet there are many other responsibilities depending on the needs of the organization. As necessary, the board of directors is responsible for the following:
- Determine the organization's mission and purpose
- Ensure effective strategic planning
- Hire a competent executive director and provide appropriate supervision and support
- Select the staff through an appropriate review process
- Evaluate the organization's programs and services
- Arbitrate organizational and personnel conflicts
- Assess its own performance
In the early stages of an organization, the most important factor is to have people who are committed to the organization's mission and who are trustworthy. As the organization grows, there will be opportunities for the board of directors to change.
