(Washington, DC) – Yesterday, Mayor Muriel Bowser outlined a comprehensive public safety agenda.  The proposal includes increasing police presence on streets and in communities as long as necessary, getting tough on the relatively small number of repeat violent offenders who continue to bring harm to the DC community, and providing the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) with the tools and resources it needs to protect neighborhoods. Because this is not just a policing issue, Mayor Bowser has proposed a number of measures that will bring stability, opportunity and more services to the neighborhoods that have been hardest hit by crime.  Working closely with Police Chief Cathy Lanier and Deputy Mayor Kevin Donahue, the Mayor is confident that this agenda will make the District safer and stronger. See the full agenda at mayor.dc.gov/saferstronger.

In the meantime, the District continues to make progress to arrest murderers and close cases.  Mayor Bowser and Chief Lanier commend the officers and detectives who have brought in three arrests in homicide cases in the last 24 hours.

Please see the below message from Chief Lanier:

On Wednesday morning, Mr. Kenneth Stewart was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder in the shooting death of Mr. Eric Jackson on August 8 in the 2200 block of Mount View Place, Southeast.

Late Wednesday last night, Mr. Maureko Hill was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder in the shooting death of Ms. Latroia Smith on November 2, 2014 in the 2700 block of Langston Place, Southeast. Ms. Smith was sexually assaulted, shot to death, and then severely burned by Mr. Hill.  In doing this, he demonstrated just how little he values human life.  This type of violent offender has no place in any community in this city.

Yesterday morning, Mr. Milkiyas Bayisa was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder in the death of Mr. Kassahun Edo on Saturday, August 22 in the 700 block of Fairmont Street, Northwest. In this case, the suspect punched the victim, who fell, hit his head and later died.

I bring these arrests to your attention to keep our community informed of the work MPD is doing to arrest and remove violent offenders from the community. We aren’t doing it alone. Your help continues to be appreciated.

Please keep calling in TIPS, keep engaging with officers and officials in your neighborhoods.  Continue to share information about what is happening and who is contributing to the violence.

Together, we will continue to make DC safer and stronger.
