New Columbia Statehood Commission to Release Draft Constitution at the Historic President Lincoln’s Cottage

Thursday, May 5, 2016

(Washington, DC) – Tomorrow, the New Columbia Statehood Commission (NCSC), Co-Chaired by Mayor Muriel Bowser and Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, will release the draft constitution as a part of the Commission’s bold plan for Statehood for the District of Columbia.

The NCSC approved a plan on April 21st, 2016 in an effort to have an advisory referendum on the November ballot this year, where residents will get to vote their support for statehood.

The NCSC will be establishing working groups to enact the advisory referendum plan for Statehood. The five working groups will be comprised of residents, advocates, and elected officials who will work to execute a multi-pronged strategy to achieve statehood. They will meet regularly, hold public sessions, and present the results of their work in the months leading up to the November advisory referendum.

The draft constitution will also be available on statehood.dc.gov where residents will be able to submit public comments. In the coming months, the NCSC will be holding Ward-based town hall meetings to discuss the draft constitution, as well convening a Constitutional Convention on June 17th and 18th.

The event is open to the public. To RSVP: http://dcstatehood.eventbrite.com
