InvestDC gives District businesses opportunity to obtain foreign investment in DC projects, create local job opportunities

(Beijing, China) – Today, as part of the District's trade trip to China, Mayor Muriel Bowser will take part in InvestDC, a unique forum that gives District-based real estate development firms and local small businesses an opportunity to pitch their projects and services to Chinese investors in Beijing.

“Small businesses represent the backbone of our economy and continue to put District residents on a pathway to the middle class,” said Mayor Bowser. “We want to send a clear signal that no matter the project or zip code, the District is a great investment. Foreign investment can go a long way in our efforts to create local jobs, produce more affordable housing, and improve our underserved communities.”

The District continues to be a popular destination for foreign capital. In 2012, $60 million in EB5 funds (the immigration investor program) was raised to support the CityMarket at O Street project and over $1 billion in foreign direct investment was raised to finance real estate projects in the District. In light of these emerging trends and opportunities, the District aims to attract millions of foreign investment dollars within the next five years, 200 DC businesses to become active in foreign markets, and double the number of international tourists. Since 2003, there have been nearly 150 FDI projects announced in Washington, DC. When completed, they will represent close to $800 million in capital investments.

Today, the District and the DC Chamber of Commerce also released the first ever, Washington, DC International Business Guide, a comprehensive resource for businesses interested in doing business with the District.
