Washington, DC

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Leif Dormsjo kicked off the District’s third AlleyPalooza campaign, the Mayor’s initiative to repair or renovate 8 alleys in each of the District’s 8 wards for 12 weeks – a total of 64 alleys throughout the District.

“The condition of our alleys is of vital importance to the health of the city, especially during our District-wide spring cleaning campaign,” Mayor Bowser said. “AlleyPalooza 3.0 continues to demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that our city’s infrastructure is safe and reliable."

This year, DDOT took a more data-driven approach to its alley selections. DDOT created an assessment tool, similar to the system used for roadways, to ensure the alleys selected were in the worst condition, using the following ratings:

• The condition of the alley;
• The numbers of service requests;
• The age of the service requests; and
• The Mayor's Office of Community Relations and Services (MOCRS)'s engagement with Advisory Neighborhood Commissions and the community

The District has more than 350 miles of alleys and receives several hundred service requests for alley repairs each year. More than 200 alleys were repaired in 2015 and the District will continue its momentum of tackling the city’s worst alleys as part of its core program. 

The Bowser Administration launched AlleyPalooza 3.0 following the success and popularity of AlleyPalooza 1 and AlleyPalooza 2.0 campaigns in 2015 where the District repaired 128 alleys--16 alleys in each ward.

“AlleyPalooza 3.0 signifies our focus on the infrastructure needs in all eight wards,” said DDOT Director Leif Dormsjo. “We’re dedicating approximately $10.5 million to repairing or reconstructing alleys to make them more reliable. We ask the community to be patient with us throughout this campaign because the results will be worth the wait.”

AlleyPalooza 3.0 was launched as a part of the District-wide spring cleaning campaign, which comes ahead of Arbor Day and on the heels of Earth Day, which encourages residents to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Each day this week, Mayor Bowser highlighted District resources available to help DC residents remove waste; keeping homes and the city clean and healthy to live in.

Thursday, April 28 at 10:30 am – Launch DOH Public Health Pilot Program
Mayor Bowser, DPW Director Christopher Shorter, and Department of Health Director LaQuandra Nesbitt will meet with business owners to launch a pilot rodent abatement program.

Mayor Bowser and DDOT Director Leif Dormsjo will participate in Ketcham Elementary School’s Arbor Day Celebration. The celebration includes tree planting education and placement in honor of Arbor Day.
