The project is part of the Old Convention Center site, now called CityCenter DC.

Also, in Hill East, the District is looking for a master developer to transform the former DC General Hospital campus and 50 acres of land into a new waterfront neighborhood that will be a national model for green building and sustainable development. Read more.

DDOE's Eco-Tip: Summer Lawn Care

Lawns cover more than 40 million acres in the United States, three times the amount of land occupied by corn crops. The DC Department of the Environment has the following tips for protecting your lawn this summer and minimizing its impact on the Earth:

  1. Use a sharp blade. This reduces tearing and is better for the grass.
  2. Raise the height of your mower blade to 2.5-3 inches and do not remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade.
  3. Longer grass will require less watering and have increased resistance to many insects and diseases.
  4. Leave the clippings on the lawn. The clippings act as a natural fertilizer and reduce the need for additional fertilizer applications.
  5. Aeration helps water and nutrients to penetrate deeper in to the soil.
  6. Consider a push mower. Gas-powered mowers cause pollution and are getting more expensive to operate.
