Restructuring Schools for Success

Mayor Fenty and DCPS Chancellor Michelle Rhee announced that the school system is exploring outside partnerships to improve 27 failing schools. The schools are in “restructuring” status under federal law, which requires dramatic action to improve test scores. Read more.


Mayor, DDOT Unveil Stadium Residential Parking Plan

Mayor Fenty and DC Department of Transportation Director Emeka Moneme briefed reporters on traffic management and residential parking plans for the neighborhood surrounding Nationals Stadium. The District is encouraging baseball fans to take Metro to Nationals home games, which begin March 29 with an exhibition game against the Baltimore Orioles. Read more.


Mayor's Citywide Job Fair Is March 11

Mayor Fenty's Spring 2008 Citywide Job Fair will be held on Tuesday, March 11 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. More than 50 District agencies and another 100 private and federal employers are expected to exhibit at the premier citywide recruiting event. Read more.


Summer Youth Employment Program Registration Open

More than 14,000 young residents are expected to register for work experience and academic enrichment activities through the DOES Passport-to-Work Summer Youth Program. The 2008 summer program will operate for ten weeks beginning June 16 through August 22. Participants, ages 14 -21, will have an opportunity to acquire basic professional work skills. Read more.


Television Studio Launches at McKinley Tech

Mayor Fenty, DCPS Chancellor Michelle Rhee and Office of Cable Television Director Eric Richardson unveiled a renovated production studio at McKinley Technology High School in Northeast. The studio allows students to learn television production and put together programming for the educational-access channel DSTV. DSTV airs on Channel 18 or 99, depending on the cable carrier. Get Ready for Summer Camp

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) offers a diverse array of exciting urban recreation and camping opportunities for youth ages 3 to 17; including sports camps, aquatic camps, therapeutic camps, and other day camps. DPR also offers Discovery Camps for youth ages 6 to 13, and Little Explorers Camps for youth ages 3 to 5. Camp Riverview is DPR’s premier overnight residential camp, located on the shores of the Potomac River in Scotland, MD.

DPR Summer Camps will run June 23 – August 15, 2008, Monday to Friday, 9 am – 5 pm. All camps will be closed on Friday, July 4. Some camps may have special events and trips beyond regular hours. Registration for DPR Summer Camps begins March 3, 2008. Read more.


District Submits Designs for New Quarter

With the District’s new commemorative quarter coin set to debut in 2009, the District Government submitted three design proposals to the United States Mint. All three proposals contained the words “Taxation Without Representation,” to reflect the District’s lack of congressional voting rights. Because the Mint rejected the proposed slogan, the District Government has suggested "Justice for All" as an alternative.

The three design narratives depict noted abolitionist Frederick Douglass, astronomer and mathematician Benjamin Banneker, and world-renowned musician Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington. Read more.
