Taxi Meter Deadline Is May 1
A DC Superior Court ruling has upheld Mayor Fenty’s order for District taxicabs to switch to time-and-distance meters by May 1. In May, cab drivers without meters face a $1,000 warning ticket that will become an actual fine as of June 1. Read more.

District Takes Slumlords to Court
Mayor Fenty, Interim Attorney General Peter Nickles and DCRA Director Linda Argo announced that the District Government is suing 20 landlords whose rental properties have a history of serious code violations. The complaint names more than 50 buildings, including more than 330 apartment units, in seven wards. Read more.

Celebrate Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Mayor Fenty has named May as Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Every May, the Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA) coordinates the District's celebration. This year, OAPIA has organized a series of community events to celebrate APIA Heritage Month. All of the events are family-oriented, free, and conveniently located at the Historical Society of Washington DC (across from the Washington Convention Center). Read more.

Repaving Season Begins; Check the List
The DC Department of Transportation has released its lists of sidewalks, streets and alleys to be redone in fiscal years 2008 and 2009. DDOT plans about $41 million in work, starting this spring. Read more.

Time to Cut the Grass
The DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs reminds you that uncut grass could cost you $500. Enforcement of seasonal grass-cutting rules runs May 1 to October 31. Grass and weeds that are more than 10 inches tall could lead to fines. During growing season, property owners (commercial and residential) are required to keep their yards free of trash and excessive vegetative growth. Read more.
