DC Tax-Free Holiday Kicks Off This WeekendThe District of Columbia will offer buyers an exemption from the 5.75 percent sales tax for school supplies, clothing, shoes and accessory items costing $100 or less. The sales tax holiday will begin 12:01 am Saturday, August 2, and run through midnight Sunday, August 10. Read more. |

 | New Gun RulesMayor Adrian M. Fenty and the Council announced legislation and regulations on the registration and storage of handguns. The new rules are necessary because of the United States Supreme Court’s ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller, which struck down the District’s handgun ban after 32 years. Read more. |

 | Mayor Welcomes Green Summer ProgramMayor Adrian M. Fenty officially welcomed the first Mayor’s Green Summer Job Corps participants. The program will engage youth in the cleaning and greening of District neighborhoods and parks and introDC them to green-collar job opportunities while eDCting them about the environmental issues facing the District.  | Restoring Eastern MarketSignificant progress has been made on the interior renovation of the South Hall of Eastern Market to restore the building from last year’s devastating fire. The roof and windows, both heavily damaged in the fire, along with the original skylight have been replaced as the first part of the exterior renovations that will bring back the 135-year-old market by next summer.  | Public Space Recycling Kick OffThe District kicked off a recycling pilot program outside of the 13th and G Street Metro Center station. The initiative will feature 25 blue recycling containers that will be placed in highly trafficked areas throughout downtown. Read more. |

 | Save On ElectricityThe DC Department of Environment has a program to save you money on your electric bill by teaming up with other customers to buy power in bulk. The DC MAP program has saved District taxpayers more than $35 million since 2004. The deadline to opt in is August 1. Read more. |

All loans are 30-year fixed rate mortgage loans and may be combined with the Department of Housing anDCmmunity Development’s Home Purchase Assistance Program (HPAP) and other down payment assistance programs.
