DC Schools Open and Ready for Students
Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, DC Public Schools (DCPS) Chancellor Michelle Rhee and the Director of the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization (OPEFM) Allen Lew announced on August 25, 2008 that all 123 school buildings are open on time and prepared to serve close to 50,000 students throughout the District.

Celebrating Summer Youth
Mayor Fenty joined young people from the Department of Employment Services (DOES) Summer Youth Employment Program to celebrate the end of a successful summer. Green Summer Job Corps members, led by the District Department of the Environment, spent the summer learning about environmental protection, cleaning up parks and rivers, and educating the public. District to Team with Harvard University
The District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) will team up with the Innovation Lab at Harvard University to implement a pilot program called Capital Gains. The program will reward middle school students based on their attendance, behavior and other academic indicators (to be determined), such as homework completion and grades.

Green Job Training
Mayor Adrian M. Fenty joined the Green Builders Council of DC to unveil the nation’s first green collar job training curriculum for the Washington, DC area construction industry. The training curriculum will be taught by National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) accredited training sponsors at the Academy of Construction & Design at Cardozo Senior High School in Northwest. Phelps High School Day
The District dedicated the new Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School, the nation’s first public high school for the construction trades. In honor of the Phelps reopening, Mayor Fenty proclaimed August 18, 2008 “Phelps High School Day.” Phelps opens after being closed for more than five years. Read more.

District Launches SmartBikeDC Program
The highly anticipated SmartBikeDC program launched in the District on August 13, 2008. SmartBikeDC is the first self-service, public bike rental program in North America. The pilot program boasts 10 racks located strategically in the downtown area allowing for easy bike pickup and drop-off. Read more.

Energy Assistance for DC Residents
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible District residents pay heating and cooling bills. The District Department of the Environment has already given nearly 30,000 grants (typically between $250 and $1,000) for residents whose electricity or gas has been disconnected or is about to be disconnected.
