(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony A. Williams today announced a proposal to address parking at the new baseball stadium in Southeast that will accommodate attendees while allowing for development around the site that residents and visitors can enjoy. He was joined by Adrian Washington, president and CEO of the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation; Bill Hall, commissioner with the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission and Herb Miller, president of Western Development Corporation.
Ive always said that this project is about more than a baseball stadium. Its about building a living, breathing neighborhood one that residents can enjoy. This terrific new deal accomplishes two goals it provides ample parking for people who drive to the games, and it allows us to create more than 50,000 square feet of retail development including a new hotel and hundreds of residential units, said Mayor Williams. Our plan builds primarily above ground, but wraps the entire parking structure with an appealing mix of stores, small shops and restaurants, office space and even housing.
Mayor Williams estimated that this added retail on the site will mean as much as $300 million in tax revenue over the next 30 years. He also added that the agreement requires 35 percent local, small and disadvantaged business participation and that the new building will create more than 3,000 new jobs during construction and more than 340 permanent jobs after the construction is complete.
A resolution submitted to the DC Council on June 16 requests the authority to dispose of land on the baseball site north and south of the stadium. Council passage of the resolution would permit the District to structure a deal with private developers for vertical development on the site and a mix of underground and above ground parking.
