(Washington, DC) With dozens of union representatives and District businessowners standing behind him on the field at RFK Stadium, Mayor Anthony A. Williams today announced a state-of-the-art partnership between the city and the unions representing workers who will build the new baseball stadium on the Anacostia River. Through this agreement, we are fulfilling the promise of economic growth, new jobs and opportunities for District residents, said Mayor Williams. The agreement guarantees a percentage of the work on the new ballpark will go to minority contractors; it ensures that many of the workers hired are District residents; it offers a great chance for youth and unskilled workers to learn valuable trades; and, it calls for unskilled apprentices to be hired at the launch of the project and upon completion be certified journeymen. Baseball is back and we are using the return of baseball to help lift all communities across the city.
Summary of Project Labor Agreement (PLA) New stadium will mean new opportunities for minority owned business and hundreds of new good-paying jobs for District residents. - The Agreement states that the stadium project will utilize apprentices for 25% of the jobs and 50% of all of those apprentices will be bona fide city residents. In order to train city residents to become journeypersons, 100% of all new apprentices will be bona fide city residents.
- Certified Local Small and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (LSDBEs) will receive 35% of the contracts. Certified LSDBEs that are awarded contracts with a total combined value of $10 million or less will not be required to recognize the union.
