Fenty Announces Administration’s 2008 Goals: “Opportunities for All”

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, joined by City Administrator Dan Tangherlini and Deputy Mayors Neil Albert and Victor Reinoso, unveiled the administration’s 2008 set of goals aimed at a safer, healthier life for all District residents. Titled “Opportunities for All,” the plan builds on last year’s successful “100 Days and Beyond” effort.

“In 2008, the District Government will continue to create the best local government humanly possible,” said Mayor Fenty. “In 2007, we made strides in providing high-quality city services to our residents and it is our job in 2008 to make sure the opportunities we create are accessible to all District residents.”

“Opportunities for All” joins the Fiscal Year 2008 performance plans already in progress at all District government agencies under Mayor Fenty’s authority.

Education
An educated populace is the cornerstone to civil society and is fundamental to a well functioning democracy. For too long the District of Columbia has failed to deliver on the promise of a high-quality education for every resident. The administration’s vision for the District is a city of lifelong learners, where high achievement is the norm, not the exception. 2008 education priorities include:
  • Developing and executing a school consolidation and closure plan.
  • Creating a college-going culture by developing Individual Graduation Plans (IGPs) for all high school students, which will involve them in managing their academic programs from grades 8 through 12.
  • Dramatically improving facilities and conditions at the schools with the highest needs.
  • Increasing the number of 9-11graders who take the PSAT in Oct. and increase the number of certified AP courses available to students.
  • Developing departmental scorecards to identify and assess performance expectations
