Ward 4 Senior Wellness Center to Open Early Summer

The Ward 4 Senior Wellness Center, currently being built in the historic Kennedy Movie Theatre is now projected to open by early summer.  Once completed, the Kennedy Senior Wellness Center will be a state-of-the-art facility. The center will provide an array of programs to promote self-care, healthy lifestyles and longevity for DC residents 60 years and older. Programs include nutrition counseling, healthcare information, training, education, recreation and peer support.

Initially slated to open early spring of 2007 as part of Mayor Fenty’s 100 Days and Beyond plan, construction projects in the original 1930s building were delayed upon the discovery of lead paint and asbestos as well as underground storage problems and foundation instability that needed to be fully corrected before construction could continue.  The process of integrating a new facility while maintaining the historical façade of the building also created delays in construction.  The construction of a brand new interior will provide for activities and other multipurpose uses related to health and wellness for Ward 4 seniors.  Ward 4 has more than 16,000 seniors, more than any other ward in the District.
