Mayor Gray to Announce Grand Opening of New Early Stages Center

The new center, operated by DCPS, is the second in the District and will help identify children ages 3-5 in need of special education services.

Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Chancellor Kaya Henderson will announce the grand opening of a new Early Stages intervention diagnostic center that will serve children living in Wards 7 and 8 on Nov. 8 at 9:30 a.m.

The new center, operated by DCPS, is the second in the District and will help identify children ages 3-5 in need of special education services. The first Early Stages center, located at Walker Jones Education Campus in Ward 6, has increased the percentage of children identified for special education services from under 3 percent to over 7 percent and provided evaluations for more than 1,000 children each year.

The new Early Stages center, located on Minnesota Avenue in Northeast, will better serve families in Wards 7 and 8. More than 40 percent of referrals for families seeking to learn more about their children’s development come from families living in Ward 7 (20 percent) and Ward 8 (24 percent).
